Bicultural Support Program

What is the Bicultural Support Program?

Formerly known as the Casual Ethnic Workers Pool (CEWP), the Bicultural Support Program (BSP) has been established since 1981 and is a free, state-wide, time-limited service, available to Australian Government approved Children's Services.

The Bicultural Support Program is run by Ethnic Child Care Family & Community Services Co-operative for Children's Services Central.

Children's Services Central is the Professional Support Co-ordinator in New South Wales and is an initiative funded by the Australian Government under the Inclusion and Professional Support Program. Children's Services Central is managed by a consortium of key organisations that resource and support the sectors of Children's Services in New South Wales.

The Bicultural Support Program provides additional resources to eligible Children's Services to assist with the inclusion of children from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds (CALD), refugee and Indigenous children.

The BSP provides approved Children's Services with time-limited support from either:

  • an on-site Bicultural Support Worker
  • an off-site Bicultural Support Consultant

An on-site Bicultural Support Worker:

  • provides hands on specific laguage and/or cultural assistance to children, parents and staff
  • assists in the settling-in of children from CALD, refugee or Indigenous backgrounds
  • encourages maintenance of the child's home language by developing and presenting culturally appropriate  experiences.

An off-site Bicultural Support Consultant:

  • provides specialist support to staff and supports the implementation of inclusive programs/curricula
  • delivers support resources on multicultural/Indigenous perspectives
  • delivers training on Cultural Competence
  • provides information on community resources and services to support the inclusion of CALD, refugee or Indigenous children and families.
